For all who dream of Italy
Sunday, February 21, 2010 at 11:23AM
So few visitors see Italy as she is to her locals. I leave you with this rich cultural feast in dialect put up on a noticeboard outside the newsagents on my last visit to Tuscany. Its not all wine and roses here, although I may have led you to believe that. If you need a translation ask someone, or I'll have to oblige.
let me know your comments on THE REAL ITALY

When one first moves to italy and starts to slowly grasp the language... the last thing to really understand is humor!
Add the dialect from something like the Vernacoliere--- and you are really Italian!
I think some of the first things most people learn when they move here are the swear words!!!
and you really have to be careful with double senses too to certain sayings!!!
thanks for sharing
"coll ' uccello ritto"? That's how i feel about Donna Jackson. Great post. Keep 'em coming.
For all who dream of Italy...buyer beware. Remember, there is quite a difference between visiting and living Italy. Many learn the hard way.
The wisequeen is wise. It's no longer wine and roses. It's a country clearly divided in two in every known aspect (cultural, economical, political, etc.) with a quiet civil war in act that gets louder and LOUDER by the day mixed in with a bit of intolerance for immigrants.
Next year Italy will celebrate its 150th year anniversary of its national unity. It's a celebration that is being shunned and cursed upon because, according to the northerners...the unification only brought ruin and corruption to THEIR part of the territory (a non existent territory called "Padania").
It's been very hard for northerners to accept the fact that southerners consider themselves Italians too (they act surprised when they see them actually wearing shoes).
So, when you ask an Italian from the north what he/she thinks is the REAL ITALY, grab a chair and listen carefully. You'll be amazed at what comes out of that mouth!
Il Vernacoliere is the best satirical newspaper in the world. i always share it.
update on the same note http://www.vernacoliere.com/edicola/locandina.gif
No double senses here... everything is very clear. It's just really coarse language in the dialect of Livorno.
Vernacoliere is always funny. I remember a friend who thought it was a serious newspaper and was all upset!
I don't think any part of the country has to complain about the others. We all have problems, just of different nature. ;o)
